Care Guide

1. Light: Grows best in full sun to part shade. A bright position with plenty of sunlight helps maintain its vibrant pink foliage colour. In Melbourne, some protection from extreme afternoon heat and strong, drying winds can help prevent leaf damage, particularly for young plants.

2. Water: Water deeply 2–3 times per week during the first few months after planting, adjusting according to rainfall and soil moisture. Once established, water around once a week during warm, dry periods. Plants grown in pots may require more frequent watering during summer. Allow the top layer of soil to begin drying between watering and avoid constantly wet or waterlogged conditions.

3. Soil: Prefers fertile, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Improve poor or heavy soil with compost before planting and ensure excess water can drain freely. For pots, use a premium-quality, well-draining potting mix.

4. Fertiliser: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring to encourage healthy foliage and new growth. A second light application can be given during the warmer growing season if required. Avoid excessive fertilising and always follow the manufacturer’s recommended application rates.

5. Pruning: Minimal pruning is required. Remove old, damaged or brown lower leaves as needed to maintain a fresh, tidy appearance. If the plant becomes too tall, stems can be cut back to encourage new shoots, although regular pruning is generally unnecessary.
