Care Guide:
1. Lighting
• Ideal Light : Bright, direct light is best. Provide your olive tree with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day . The more sunlight the tree gets, the better it will do.
• Supplemental lighting : If you do not have a sunny window, you may need to use a grow light to provide the required intensity of light, especially during the winter months when natural sunlight is limited.
NOTE : Consider to move olive trees outdoors in winter months to get more sunlight
2. Watering
Olive trees like consistently moist soil, but they don’t like to sit in water.
• When to water : Water when the top 1-2 inches of soil feels dry. Water thoroughly, allowing water to drain out of the bottom of the pot.
In the warmer months, water 1-2 times a week.
In winter months: water less frequently, every 10-14 days.
• Note : Make sure your pot has good drainage to prevent waterlogging. Overwatering can cause root rot, so it’s important to find a balance.
3. Temperature and humidity
• Ideal temperature : The ideal temperature is 15-24°C during the day and slightly cooler at night.
• Avoid : Try to avoid extreme temperature fluctuations. Should not be placed near cold drafts, air conditioners and heaters.
• Humidity : Olive trees are adapted to dry, arid climates, so they don’t require high humidity.
5. Soil
• Ideal soil : Use a rich, well-draining potting mix. You can mix in some perlite or orchid bark to improve drainage. A general-purpose houseplant mix will work fine as long as it drains well.
• pH : Olive trees prefer slightly alkaline soil with a pH of 7.0-8.0 . You can test the soil pH and amend it if necessary.
6. Fertilizing
• When to fertilize : Feed your plant every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer) using a slow-release fertilizer or one designed for fruit trees.
• Avoid : Fertilizing during the winter months when the plant’s growth slows down. Excessive fertilization can lead to salt buildup in the soil, harming the roots.
7. Repotting and Maintenance
• Repotting : Repot in spring when the plant outgrows its current pot or when the roots become root-bound, which could be every 2-3 years. Choose a pot that’s 1-2 inches larger in diameter than the current one. Ensure the pot has good drainage.
• Pruning : Prune the tree in early spring before the growing season begins. Remove any dead, damaged, or diseased branches, and thin out any overcrowded areas to improve air circulation.
• Shape : Olive trees can develop a more bushy or compact shape if you prune them regularly. You can also prune the top of the tree to encourage lateral branching if you want a more shrub-like appearance.
8. Common Issues
Here are a few common problems you might encounter with Olive trees:
• Yellowing leaves : This is typically a sign of overwatering, root rot, or nutrient deficiency.
Check your watering schedule and ensure the plant is in well-draining soil. Yellowing leaves can also occur from low light or if the plant is stressed from temperature fluctuations.
• Brown leaf tips : This can be caused by over-fertilizing, or underwatering.
• Leaf drop : Olive trees may drop leaves due to stress from changes in light, temperature, or watering. Ensure the plant is getting enough light and not being overwatered.
• Pests (like spider mites, aphids, or scale): Regularly inspect the plant, and treat any infestations promptly with insecticidal soap or a natural remedy like neem oil.
Pet-friendly : Olive Tree is safe for both pets and small children.
