Care Guide
1. Light: Grows well in full sun to part shade. For the strongest red, bronze and orange foliage colour, plant in a position that receives plenty of sunlight. Plants grown in heavier shade will generally remain greener.
2. Water: Water deeply 2–3 times per week during the first few months after planting, adjusting according to rainfall and soil moisture. Once established, Nandina ‘Moon Bay’ is relatively drought tolerant but benefits from deep watering every 1–2 weeks during extended hot and dry periods. Avoid constantly wet or waterlogged soil.
3. Soil: Prefers fertile, well-drained soil but adapts to a range of soil types. Improve poor soil with compost or organic matter before planting. Mulching around the root zone can help retain moisture and regulate soil temperature, keeping mulch away from direct contact with the stems.
4. Fertiliser: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser suitable for shrubs in early spring to support healthy new growth. A second light application during the growing season can be applied if required. Avoid excessive fertilising, which may encourage soft growth.
5. Pruning: Minimal pruning is required due to its naturally compact growth habit. Remove any dead, damaged or untidy growth as needed. If rejuvenation is required, older stems can be selectively removed near the base to encourage fresh new growth. Avoid regularly shearing the plant, as this can reduce its naturally attractive form.
