Foxtail Fern (Asparagus densiflorus ‘Myersii’)
Despite the name, this isnโt a true fernโitโs actually a member of the asparagus family. Those gorgeous, emerald-green “foxtail” plumes are made of tiny, needle-like leaves that look delicate but are surprisingly tough.
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light or part shade. It can handle morning sun, but harsh, direct afternoon sun can bleach the bright green plumes to a dull yellow.
Soil: Needs rich, organic, but sharply well-draining soil.
Watering: Moderate. The plant grows from underground tubers that store water, making it surprisingly drought-hardy. Let the top few inches of soil dry out between waterings. If planted in a pot, ensure it never sits in a saucer of stagnant water, or the roots will rot.
Protection: It is frost-tender. If you get heavy winter frosts, itโs best grown in a pot so you can move it under cover, or planted in a protected spot under a tree canopy.
