Care Guide
1. Light: Grows best in full sun to part shade. A position with at least 4–6 hours of sunlight per day will encourage dense, compact growth. It can tolerate some shade, although growth may become less dense in heavily shaded positions.
2. Water: Water deeply 2–3 times per week during the first few months after planting, adjusting according to rainfall, temperature and soil moisture. Once established, water deeply around once a week during extended warm and dry periods. Plants grown in pots may require more frequent watering. Allow the top layer of soil to begin drying between watering and avoid constantly wet or waterlogged conditions.
3. Soil: Prefers fertile, well-drained soil but adapts to a range of soil types. Improve poor soil with compost or organic matter before planting. For pots, use a premium-quality, well-draining potting mix. Mulching around the root zone can help retain moisture, keeping mulch away from direct contact with the stems.
4. Fertiliser: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser suitable for shrubs in early spring to encourage healthy, dense new growth. A second light application during the warmer growing season can be given if required. Water thoroughly after fertilising and follow the manufacturer’s recommended application rates.
5. Pruning: Lightly trim during the active growing season to maintain the desired height, width and shape. Regular tip pruning will encourage denser, bushier growth when used as a hedge. Its naturally upright form means less pruning is generally required than broader hedging varieties. Remove dead, damaged or weak branches as needed.
